Ben To Star In Period Thriller ‘The Critic’

Ian McKellen (The Good Liar), Gemma Arterton (Summerland) and Mark Strong (1917) will lead the cast of ‘The Critic’, a period thriller based on Anthony Quinn’s classic novel ‘Curtain Call’. Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), BAFTA nominee Romola Garai (Suffragette), Ben Barnes (Westworld) and Alfred Enoch (Foundation) will also star.

In the film set in 1934 London, McKellen plays Jimmy Erskine, the most feared drama critic in town—with Arterton as Nina Land, the actress who’s determined to win his favor. When Jimmy finds himself in the crosshairs of his newspaper’s new owner, David Brooke (Strong), Nina is entangled into a dangerous web of blackmail, deceit and murder.

Anand Tucker is directing from a script by Oscar nominee Patrick Marber, with production currently underway in and around London.

Ben Joins Cast of ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’

Netflix has announced cast members – along with the writers and directors – for ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, its anthology series from Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro that’s set for next year.

Production has begun in Toronto on creator, EP and co-showrunner del Toro’s collection of live-action stories that Netflix says is meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, the eight sinister tales – including two original works by del Toro – will be brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by the ‘Shape of Water’ filmmaker.

The full list of cast and creatives set for ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, along with the actors’ credits, can be found here.

Crispin Glover (River’s Edge) and Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone) star in an episode written by Lee Patterson (Curve, The Colony) (based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft) and directed by Keith Thomas (Firestarter).
