Ben Barnes Returns To Stage In ‘Birdsong’

According to this article, published by the U.K. Daily Mail, Ben will return to the stage this fall to star in the stage version of Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong.

British film star Ben Barnes will return to the stage to star as Stephen Wraysford in the world premiere stage version of Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong, according to today’s Daily Mail. The adaptation of the best-selling 1993 novel, directed by Trevor Nunn, will have a limited season from 29 September 2010 at the West End’s Comedy Theatre.

Part of Faulks’ trilogy which also comprises The Girl at the Lion d’Or and Charlotte Gray, Birdsong centres on Stephen Wraysford (Barnes) who, while staying as the guest of a factory owner in pre-war France, embarks on a passionate affair with Isabelle, the wife of his host. The affair changes them both forever.

A few years later Stephen finds himself back in the same part of France, but this time as a soldier at the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest encounter in British military history. As his men die around him, Stephen turns to his enduring love for Isabelle for the strength to continue and to save something for future generations.

Birdsong goes into rehearsal in early August and performances are set to begin at the Comedy Theatre on September 18, with opening night on September 28.

The play is scheduled to run through January 15, 2011. (Buy Tickets)

so looks like the Theater community has made peace with Ben Barnes. despite the title, its a fair question to ask if this is a musical, given Ben’s penchance for musical anything?

I doubt it’s a musical. I’ve read the book and I can’t imagine them adapting it that way but you never know. There’s a lot about life in the trenches and how horrendous it was so I imagine that it’ll be quite upsetting. Good choice on ben’s behalf. I love that he keeps doing totally different projects.

I agree with Alison… I doubt it’s a musical. The boy can sing, but I can’t picture Ben busting out into song and dance with out giggling like a school girl at boy band concert. LOL

I’m really happy that He’s gone and make his peace with the stage community. It’ll mean that he’ll be able to stay in one place for a while… especially in London which is where he grew up and can be near his family for a while. It’s hard always being away.

I’m so excited – just bought tickets for myself and my daughter for the 23rd September matinee performance!

Although I am from London at present I live a good way away – Somerset – so the fares will be quite expensive. I was going to drive into the suburbs then get the tube in but think this would be too exhausting, so will probably get the train up to Waterloo.
