First Look At ‘Jackie & Ryan’ (Clip)

Thanks to Deadline.com, we have our first clip from ‘Jackie & Ryan’ (previously named ‘Your Right Mind’). In the clip, Ryan (Ben Barnes) croons a riveting, toe-tapping bluegrass variation on the folk song “Railroaders’ Lament” (aka “500 Miles”, made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary) inside a recording studio. View the clip in our video archive.

Having screened earlier today at the Venice Film Festival and premiering tomorrow night, Jackie & Ryan, is the third feature from director Ami Canaan Mann (daughter of Michael Mann), which follows a train hopper, Ryan (Ben Barnes), who is set on becoming a musician during the millennium’s recession in Utah. He meets Jackie (Katherine Heigl), a single mother who is fighting over custody for her daughter, however, a car accident propels their lives together.

One of the inspirations for Mann was an Austin, Texas street band she heard, performing early twentieth-century music. “It struck me that, in the midst of the commercialism of a US film market, here were a group of guys whose objective was simply excellence in playing the music they loved and then trying to create a hand to mouth existence playing that music. Hard not to respect that. Or want to tell a story about it,” said Mann in the Venice Film Festival guide.

Jackie & Ryan also stars Clea DuVall and Sheryl Lee.

Gorgeous! Been missing Ben so much. Lovely to see his hair a bit longer again, though it’s not long enough!

Looking forward to this film, but wonder if we will get it in England?

Have I missed something? When did the name of God Only Knows change to By the Gun?

August 31st, 2014

Stephanie said:

Nightshade: It was changed last month by the distributor, Millennium Entertainment. Emilio said the reasons behind the name change were ‘other films with the same or similar titles, the Beach Boys song, marketing reasons’, etc.

Ami Canaan Mann (director of ‘Jackie & Ryan’) had some nice things to say about Ben in a new interview from Venice:

DEADLINE: The revelation here is Ben Barnes, who I thought was a singing star who took a movie role. Turns out he’s the kid from The Chronicles Of Narnia. He’s got that sympathetic vibe to him, but a growling voice that stands up to that style of music. Where’d you find him?

MANN: Amazing, right? I had the greatest time working with him. It’s a tricky role. I needed somebody with the physicality and the physical demeanor of men from the 1930s even. There’s a rugged, lean kind of manliness that reflects a way you live, and how you have to use your body. I needed someone with a heart of gold, it had to be clear from his face that he’s a good person or you don’t believe the story. And then that voice? He didn’t know how to play the guitar before we started, but I knew he had such a high bar he’d commit to getting to place on the guitar where we could reasonably sell he was playing on that level. He’s brilliant. That’s him singing and for several songs, him playing the guitar.”

Ok, so who else has watched this clip multiple times already (me – raising hand!!) I cannot wait for this film to come out. I think it will be like Easy Virtue – enjoyable to watch over and over again. I think this movie will really showcase Ben’s genuine sweetness (love that Ami Mann used the words “heart of gold”) and will be a favorite because he’s singing again! Definitely ready to hear some new songs from Ben. Can’t believe after so long waiting that all of his current projects will practically overlap. It’s great.

Ben was going to the Venice Film Festival, right?
I don’t find any picture :(

He wasn’t able to attend the Venice Film Festival after all. :( They mentioned him during the press conference yesterday and said the reason he wasn’t there was because of his filming obligations in Romania. He wasn’t able to leave the set. (Apparently this is their last week of filming ‘Sons of Liberty’.)

For those who are interested, here’s the full ‘Jackie & Ryan’ press conference from Venice (with the director and 2 of the producers):

It’s dubbed in Italian but if you turn down your right speaker, the translator goes away, and you can listen to the press conference in English out of the left speaker. :)
